Sayyidina Shibil

Location: Medinatul Shuhada (The City of the Martyrs)

He is the Sayyid Muhammad son of al-Fadl son of al-Abbas the paternal uncle of the Emissary of Godﷺ and his mother is Maymuna al-Habashiya (The Abyssinian) who was wedded to al-Fadl when he travelled to Abyssinia. It so happened that a group of the companions of the Prophet Muhammadﷺ coming from Medina to Abyssinia where present to carry out the marriage contract. al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad, Muaz bin Jabal, Abdullah bin Umar (may God be pleased with them) were all there.

Sayyid Shibil was born (may God be pleased with him) in the month of Rajab in the year 9 AH. He was nicknamed Shibil because his father, al-Fadl was courageous and his son was similar to him as the proverb goes: “This cub is from that Lion.”

He was martyred in the cause of God (may God be pleased with him) in the battle that cleansed Egypt from the rule of the Byzantines. A group of blessed companions were also martyred along with him and so the place was named “City of the Martyrs.”
